*Priced at only one rattle
In the North American Indigenous Culture, rattles were used to settle infants to relax, calm down the babies. Other beliefs were to dignify independency. They carry raw, powerful element energy and embody water, fire, earth, and air. Their construction celebrates the three kingdoms, or nations of animals, minerals, and plants. Animals are represented by the rattle’s container, or the leather used to decorate itEmbark on a cultural crafting journey with our Indigenous-Inspired Rattle Making Kit, designed to provide a hands-on experience that reflects the North American Indigenous tradition of using rattles to soothe infants and promote independence. This 45-60 minute project invites participants to delve into the ancient wisdom of embodying the essential elements—water, fire, earth, air—and celebrating the unity of animal, mineral, and plant kingdoms.
Included in the kit are a 60-inch piece of sinew, hole-punched rawhide, a 6” stick with a notch, fine sandstones, a bag of stones, a paper funnel, and a tapestry needle. Participants will need containers, scissors, additional tapestry needles, corn kernels, and optional decorative materials like leather, beads, and feathers to personalize their rattles.
Following the soaking, lacing, and filling instructions, crafters will create a rattle that not only serves as a calming tool but also as a decorative piece rich in cultural significance. This crafting experience is an excellent way for individuals and groups to connect with Indigenous culture, learn new skills, and create a meaningful artifact.
